Since Riceman and Leigo are planning to "back-pack" China. We started doing research on back-packs. We went to EMS yesterday. There are lots of different kinds and sizes of back-packs to choose from. The sales at EMS are usually expert outdoor gurus who know their shit. So we asked for some help. Summary of the conversation goes:
Leigo: Need some help with the backpacks.
Sales: How long is the trip?
Leigo: About 2/3 weeks.
Sales: Are you carrying your own sleeping bags and tent?
Leigo: No, we will be staying at hotels.
Sales: Are you carrying your own food for two weeks?
Leigo: Food?? Why?! We buy them as we go.
Sales: Are you carrying your own water for two weeks?
Leigo: Water?? We will be buying water.
Sales: Oh...so basically you will be carrying some clothes and some books.
Leigo: Basically, yeah.
Sales walks Leigo and Riceman over to the day pack section, and point to a typical school bag, "If you guys pack light, a day pack is all you need".......

Back-packing in China can very dangerous. You just can't imagine how bad the robbers are. Believe me, they will not hesitate if they have to kill you. This comes from first hand information.
Don't take so many cards with you coz people often mistaken them with ATM cards.
And check your hotel room as soon as you get in. Coz sometimes robbers might hide in the closet or even underneath the beds. Better safe than sorry.
Other than that, enjoy your trip. Traveling in China is fascinating.
if the airspace opens
i will do a lot of flights to china in the future...
lets hope it happens
Jessica's post is freaking me out. But I never stayed anything less then 4 stars in China since its cheap there.
Still this freaks me out "robbers might hide in the closet or even underneath the beds."
Leigo and Riceboy, Stop trying to be a wanna be backpacker. You guys make too much money to pretend that you are a poor student.
We got our HEP A and B shots today. Boy, was it expensive!
You guys, don't worry so much about travelling in China. Especially you Lei, it's not your first time in China!!!
Aiya. Just like travelling to any place you're not familiar with, be alert and use commonsense.
One idea just popped up. You could check out Guai Zhou (the province where I did volunteer work), its tourism is not yet developed, I know a local travel agent and mini-van driver who could bring you around. And if you really want to use those back-pack, you could visit the school that we sponsor and stay at the teachers' dorm. I could go to the school with you if you want. =)
GOOD JOB!! on the shots! buy plenty of wet-naps, and purell.
